My name is Nacio Rey.

So between guest hosting at the station and doing some things here and there for the paper, I've still been making sure to put aside time to continue my exploration of the fascinating island of Hokkaido.

This past weekend i was invited to the Asahiyama zoo.

I had read about it before I came to japan as one of the many highlights of Hokkaido where the penguins parade freely.
So, when I received the invite I was beyond ecstatic. The zoo I experienced here is very different from the zoo's back in the states.

I don't believe I've mentioned this before but I am a vegetarian. One of the biggest reasons I decided to make the lifestyle change from one of a carnivore to that of a vegetarian was because I don\'t agree with the treatment of animals in the states.
So, it only makes sense that I don't favor nor support the zoos or aquariums back home because I personally feel that animals belong in their natural habitats and not locked up in cages for our own amusement.

However, I was pleasantly surprised by the layout of the zoo here in japan.
Many of the animals were grouped together in a "lets all get along" style and to make it even better the majority of the cages weren't cages at all. Instead many of them were open areas that allowed the monkeys and other less dangerous species to move around freely.

To be quite honest, things almost turned badly for me when one of the monkeys decided to swing above my head and figured it would be amusing to swing its fecal matter my way!
Luckily for me though, I have four brothers and I'm well prepared on how to dodge unwanted, hazardous matter, very quickly. So ha! The joke is on you monkey.
